Vacation Part 1 – Asheville

The past few weeks have been pretty inconsistent that it is taking me up till now to really know what day it is.  Shawn and I were on a week-long vacation that we started in the middle of the week.  Add that with the 4th of July being on a Wednesday, and you have a “what day is it?” and “is today a work day?” mentality for about 2 weeks.  Nevertheless, I am back to normal now.

Our first stop was in Asheville, North Carolina.  Asheville is a small, but very amazing town.  Bonus, it was also recently named as one of the 10 best vacation cities for beer lovers (great if you are a beer lover).  Their downtown is really beautiful.  We saw the Pack Square area, the Asheville Art Museum, and scoped out some restaurants and shops.  We definitely recommend the Early Girl Eatery, Tupelo Honey, and Bistro 1896.

We also went hiking at the Craggy Gardens area down the Blue Ridge Parkway.  It was a sporadically rainy day, but we went ahead and braved the trail.  It was cloudy when we reached the summit and we narrowly avoided getting dumped on by rain by the time we got back into the car.  Lucky us!

But the main reason we were there was to see my friend Matt marry his fiancée, Jenny.  Matt is one of my good friends since I was a teenager, when we met during summer swim team.  We don’t always get to talk very often, but when we do, it’s always great catching up.  Their wedding was absolutely gorgeous.  Held at Hidden River Events, it was a beautiful wedding with lovely country touches.  I also enjoyed the fact that they didn’t have a traditional wedding cake.  They had an entire table full of cakes for everyone to choose from!  Best idea I have ever heard of.

It was a fantastic night.  Unfortunately, we couldn’t stay in Asheville any longer.  We had to leave the next day to Detroit.  Stay tuned for the next post on that.
